Petition to Remove the Bridge

This PETITION calls upon the Borough Council to REMOVE The bridge.

Some comments from Facebook –

“It’s ugly and blocks out the old buildings on the town side!”

“Not an elegant bridge. This new bridge looks like it could take heavy 50 ton vehicles, yet it is just for pedestrians and cyclists ! Suspension bridges are supposed to use cables so as to look elegant, not great big fat tubes ! Awful design.”

“This UGLY LUMP of METAL next to our town symbol is a disgrace and an insult to all those people that have for many years looked after and tried to preserve our beautiful riverside. If any of my local taxes have been and or are going to be used to maintain this disfigurement of our riverside then I demand a refund.”

If you think the bridge should be REMOVED please sign this petition.

Remove The Bridge Petition

This petition calls upon the Borough Council to REMOVE the Riverside North foot/cycle bridge recently strung across Bedford’s River Ouse.

Sited, as it is, next to Bedford’s iconic and beautiful Town Bridge, (a Listed Heritage Monument ), we consider this new structure is too massive, is unsuitable and spoils Bedford’s celebrated riverside .

This is the bridge Bedford was told by the developer that we would be getting –

The light and elegant footbridge offered and agreed in the Riverside North planning application.

This is what Bedford has actually got –

The New Footbridge - Note the scale of the bridge members against the workman on it. .

Does this massively membered new footbridge, when set against Bedford’s other elegant bridges, say of Bedford that the town aspires only to the low cost and not the best?
